TELL ME A STORY, RED DRAGON...
It's not much to look at. It's quite possibly the funkiest building in Baton Rouge, but it's the Red Dragon. Home of the Red Dragon Tales Reader's Theatre.
In another life it was the Red Dragon Tattoo Parlor; currently it serves as the Red Dragon Listening Room, a place founded by Binky Records (BinkyRecords.com), the famous Baton Rouge folk-music label, as a layover performance hall for a whole bunch of esteemed Austin recording artists.
We're also going to use the Red Dragon as an experimental reader's theatre. Yep, we're going to pick the best short stories from our submissions and ask you to come and read them to the public. It won't be a large public; the Red Dragon only seats 80.
Southern literature, dark literature, humorous literature, genre literature; we'll consider it all. Nothing is too far out. But it's got to be something plain folks can relate to and good enough to keep a (possibly) unruly audience attentive.
Look at it this way, if you can create art in a dump like this then you are a true artist.
The Dragon is looking for good SHORT STORIES and the authors who want to share them orally with a real listening audience.
If you're the shy type and don't think you can read your story in public, it's no problem. Just find someone who likes to draw unnecessary attention to him/herself and ask them to read the story for you. Get an under-utilized actor to read it for you, there are plenty of them around. Or maybe we can help find you a willing story reader. The point is, the more animated the story telling, the more engaged the audience.
Don't worry if you're from out of town and can't make it to the Chemical City to read your story We'll find one of the above-mentioned under-employed actors to read it and send you a nice thank you card. (Or at least a nice e-mail.)
So, amaze your friends, buy some X-ray glasses and submit your fine fiction to the Red Dragon Tales Reader's Theatre.
